Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah the United States is a rapper and actress. Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and performer. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's mother and father divorced after Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated in the Baptist Church. The stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and gentle in Arabic was given to her by her cousin when she was only eight. Latifah has always been large, at 5'10" and was the center forward on her high school basketball team. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz during a play in her high school. Latifah began beatboxing with the women's fresh rap group. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. The single caught the eye from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and released her first track Wrath of My Madness.
